Captive Nations Week, 2011

This proclamation designates July 17-23, 2011, as Captive Nations Week, continuing an annual tradition begun by President Eisenhower in 1959. It expresses U.S. solidarity with people living under oppressive regimes and reaffirms commitment to human rights, democratic values, and freedom worldwide, but contains no binding policy directives or mandates.
